About Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler:

Salbutamol (albuterol) is a medication used to relax and open up your airways. It is used to relieve wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness in people with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Salbutamol is a fast-acting bronchodilator and reliever medication. It belongs to a class of medications known as short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist. Salbutamol works by stimulating the beta-2 adrenoceptors in your bronchial muscles, which are the smooth muscles lining the two large tubes (bronchi) that carry air from your windpipe (trachea) to your lungs. This causes your bronchi to relax and dilate, widening your airway for a short period of about 4 to 6 hours and making it easier for you to breathe. It can also act on beta-2 adrenoceptors in your uterus (womb).

Indications of Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler

1. Asthma:
   • Acute Asthma Attacks: Provides rapid relief from symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness during an asthma attack.
   • Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: Prevents and treats bronchospasm triggered by physical activity.
2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):
   • Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema: Manages symptoms by improving airflow and reducing respiratory distress.
3. Bronchospasm:
   • Effective in treating bronchospasm associated with various conditions such as respiratory infections, allergies, and other triggers.
4. Acute Severe Asthma (Status Asthmaticus):
   • Used in emergency treatment to provide rapid relief from severe asthma attacks.
5. Other Respiratory Conditions:
   • May be prescribed for conditions that cause reversible airway obstruction, improving breathing and reducing symptoms.

Dosage and Administration of Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler

For the relief of acute bronchospasm, 1 or 2 inhalations of salbutamol 100 micrograms may be given as required, up to 4 times daily. 2 inhalations may also be given just before exertion for the prophylaxis of exercise-induced bronchospasm.

In acute severe asthma where delivery via nebulizer is not available, 4 to 6 inhalations of salbutamol 100 micrograms inhaler may be given at intervals of 10 to 20 minutes via a large volume spacer. In children, for the treatment of reversible airways obstruction, including nocturnal asthma, and prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm, aerosol inhalation:

• 1 month to 18 years of age, 100 or 200 micrograms (1 or 2 inhalations) up to four times daily, for occasional use only.

Contraindication of Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler

There are no known contraindications but Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler should be administered cautiously to patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis. Salbutamol and beta-blocking drugs such as propranolol should not usually be prescribed together.

Storage of Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler

Store Salbutamol (Salbumin) Inhaler at temperatures exceeding 30°C.
